Primordial sound meditation is primarily based upon chanting of Om or Aum, the eternal syllable. The Upanishads say that Om is the primordial mantra or the ‘first’ sound of the universe and was generated by the cosmic vibration that resulted in all of creation. Paramhansa Yogananda described Om as - “The creative voice of God, the vibration of the cosmic motor.”
At the time of your birth, there is a specific vibration or frequency that exists in the Universe based on your geographical location. These sounds or vibrations were known of and recorded by sages and seers thousands of years ago and can now be used to find the sound or vibration that existed when you came into this world.
This sound is called a “beej” or seed and is derived from the sound of each individual’s “Nakshatra-Pada”. Nakshatra is one of the 27 sectors along the ecliptic (the apparent path of the Sun on the celestial sphere) covering 13 degrees and 20 minutes, and Pada is one quarter of the Nakshatra covering 3 degrees and 20 minutes.
The position of the moon at the time of a person’s birth determines his or her Nakshatra-Pada, thus making the seed mantra unique to that person.
Being aware of that sound, and using it as part of your primordial sound mantra, directs your awareness back to the level of universal consciousness. In doing this you will experience your true essential nature and lean into your connection to the Universe.
Why is Chanting So Beneficial?
To chant primordial sounds, the full sound is meant to come from your lower abdomen. In Japan, this area is called the hara, or soft belly. Chanting fully from the hara promotes and develops deep breathing. Deep breathing is very important if you want to heal yourself. It helps to ground you, releases any tension in your abdomen, creates a strong physical vessel in which you can embody the universe, and it enables the vibration of the sound to travel through your whole body, not just your throat.
Chanting is also beneficial because it allows us to focus on a sound, which in turn helps the mind to become calm. Typically, the mind is going all over the place as we think about things from the past and the future, and what we are doing in the present moment. By focusing on just one sound however, we stop following our thoughts as they race through time. Instead, we still the mind; letting go of clinging to the past, present, and future. This, in turn, creates a tremendous opening within for healing to take place.
